What is PCB?

Steps in PCB design

Circuit schematic capture

The capturing of the schematic for the circuit is achieved in a variety of ways. Circuits that are entered into a schematic capture tool may either form part of the PCB design suite or constitute an external package with exportable output in a suitable format. Simulations of the circuit may be undertaken at this stage.

Once the schematic capture is complete, the electronic design of the circuit is then converted into a ‘netlist’, which is nothing but interconnectivity information.


PCB component placement

A rough idea of where the components will be placed is essential before undertaking detailed PCB design and layout. This will highlight the requirements, such as space needed for the required circuitry and the number of layers needed in the board.

After the rough estimate, a more detailed component layout is made for the PCB design that takes into account aspects, such as the proximity of devices and RF considerations. All components incorporated into the PCB must have all the relevant information, so that they can easily be called up when required.


Routing

Routing the physical connections between all the components, according to the netlist from the schematic, is achieved by using a number of layers made available for connections. Routing for larger designs may take substantial amount of computing power, not to mention significant amount of time.


PCB files

The information for the photo plots of the PCB layout are obtained in the form of Gerber files. In addition, drill information is also generated along with the screen print and photo-resist information. Drilling is crucial and may prove costly if different sized holes are to be drilled.
