A control board is very different from a circuit board as this is where all commands to an electrical device are given. It also regulates current and contains other command-giving switches and dials. Sometimes electronic control board repair can be difficult but it can most certainly be attempted at home with the proper guidance.

A control board is not simply a circuit but also gives commands to a possible digital display on the device for example in the case of an electric oven or microwave. It often controls temperature and other tasks which are specific to the device. It is the center that processes all functions related to buttons on that specific device.

Fixing A Control Board At Home

• Beware of diagnostic codes. Your first clue that something is wrong with the control board of a device is when the display is irregular or fails to show up at all. Customary lighting up functions failing to perform is also a key indication. In these cases the control board may need to be replaced or it may need to be salvaged; this will depend on the rest of the troubleshooting process.

• After this preliminary evaluation shut off power to the device and expose the control board which is usually towards the top on the back for larger electronics. Shut off the main fuse box in your house to prevent any accidents and use a screw driver to open the back to reveal the control board.

• In the case of most touch-pad operated machines there will be a wire connecting the pad to the board and you need to cut it. Screw the back on after this and turn the device on. A fault code will become visible after some time. If this doesn’t happen you may need to consult a professional.

• If you want to go a step further analyze the control board and find pins six and eight which are usually stuck to the connector plug especially in large household appliances. These pins are also usually connected to the sensor in ‘smart’ devices which can help you figure out what the issue is. Look at the manual provided with the device for a wiring diagram. In most cases a lead or two goes bad and jeopardizes the entire flow of electricity.

• The other thing which is worth investing in is an ohm meter. Use this meter to ascertain the reading of the electronic sensor. If it is more than the recommended 1200 Ohms then you need to take your control board to an expert. The reading should also ideally not fall below 900 Ohms.

• A conductor pen is a useful device to have in your repair arsenal because it can allow the repair of small traces which are difficult to reach with household alternatives like dental picks. It can also be rather precise in melting and constructing solder joints if your circuit board is the main issue rather than your control board as it is in most cases.
