The success of any electronic device lies in the design of its electronic circuit. An electronic circuit basically consists of various components, such as resistors, inductors, capacitors, diodes and transistors etc. All these are connected with each other by means of wires that convey the current through the circuit.
What is circuit design?
A circuit design is a kind of blueprint that provides the shape an electronic circuit will take. It indicates the exact location of the various components of a circuit board and the path that the connecting wire will take in connecting all these components. A well-designed circuit does not pose any problems in the smooth flow of current and helps in error-free functioning of that particular electronic device.
The latest circuit designs have done away with the wire connecting the various components. Now the components are soldered to the interconnections, created on the printed circuit board (PCB).
The electronic circuit design process
● Analog circuit: The process of designing an analogue circuit is through schematic diagrams, using lines for wires and unique symbols for various components. This circuit holds transistor, resistors, capacitors, diodes and wires. Analogue circuitry may be in series, parallel or both.
● Digital circuits: The digital circuitry design makes use of the data represented by zeroes and ones. It takes the electrical signals in the form of discrete values. These circuit use transistors extensively that are interconnected to create logic gates. Digital circuits are capable of providing both logic and memory that facilitates computations.
Block diagram
A block diagram is a flowchart that is used for designing new systems or improve on the prevailing system. Its structure enables a high-level outline of key system modules, major process participants and their relationships. Since a block diagram is more of an overview of a circuit diagram, it may not give every detail.
Block diagram is based on the system input and output. In other words, it is ‘opaque’ on what it does to the inputs to generate the outputs. This principle is known as black box. This ‘opaqueness’ is either because the parts that move from input to output are unknown or they are insignificant.
Black box design
As mentioned before, a black box can be viewed only in terms of the transfer characteristics of its inputs and outputs. This makes its internal workings and implementation ‘opaque’. On the other hand, where the inner components are available for inspection, it is referred as white box or clear box.
A black box can be understood as a function that has both the inputs and outputs. A mathematical modelling helps map the elements from one set of inputs to the elements of a second set of outputs.
