Amplifier Circuit Board Repair

Amplifier Circuit Board Repair

Amplifiers circuits are found in almost every sound system. However, amplifier circuit board repair can be a bit tricky since there a few more components than the circuit boards of an air conditioner or a simpler device. Of course once you have detected that the amplifier is not turning on there can be any number of things that might have gone wrong and if you do a thorough evaluation, you have better chances of not getting ripped off by the repairman.

Electrical Connections

When you buy wiring really cheaply on websites or in the lower end section in the hardware store you are likely to face corrosion and oxidization of the wires quicker. This severs the electrical connection and this might be the reason your amplifier is not turning on. The next reason can be the breaking of a solder joint in the connected wires.

Blown Fuses

If a fuse is blown then the device will malfunction but the solution is simple which is to replace the fuse and most people are able to do this themselves since there is less risk of getting this wrong as fuses are not as tiny and undetectable as circuit traces. Discoloration on the board and often just a burning smell can be enough to show that a fuse has blown and it is not safe to turn on the device till that is addressed.

Electrolytic capacitors are found in most consumer electronic goods and they have a shorter lifespan than the entire circuit board and sometimes they do need to be replaced. Short circuiting is common when they have outlived their useful life so keep an eye out for that.

If you incur a fire or an electrical hazard due to a blown fuse it is recommended to not attempt to fix the amplifier yourself but to seek professional help. You might also want to check the instructions given in the manual provided by the manufacturer.

Solutions

• Clean your wires and jumper cables with alcohol swaps as often as possible and use this chance to analyze their overall condition and whether or not they need replacement. If the wires are kept dirty they will rust and tarnish quicker and oxidization will occur.

• Remember that a standard amplifier (depending on how large the entire sound system is) can have more than one circuit board so your evaluation process needs to include all of them in order to ascertain where the issue is.

• In the case of a broken solder joint you will need a drill and a soldering iron in order to recreate the joint and restart connectivity between the wires. In order to hold the joint you can use screws drilled into the circuit board or you could also use epoxy super glue as a simpler remedy.

• As discussed above it is often the electrolytic capacitors that are to blame and they can be purchased from any hardware store rather cheaply.
